Many calls to law firms come from a parent, spouse, child or friend, not the person who needs the lawyer. The call goes wrong when nobody asks who the client is.

The caller is worried and wants to help, so they talk freely. The person who is actually in trouble is not on the line. Intake can end up taking facts that belong to someone else, promising things on their behalf or booking a consultation the real client never agreed to.
These calls are common in criminal defense, immigration and family law matters, and in any urgent situation.
The firm's rules about who may speak for a potential client, and what may be shared, are set by the firm and its attorneys. Intake follows them and does not improvise.
"I can hear how worried you are. Let me make sure I help the right person. Does your brother know you are calling? Could I take his number as well, and could we set up a time when he can speak with the attorney himself?"
Example wording only.
Callers will ask what their relative should do, say or sign. Those are legal questions, and the answer is the same: the attorney will go through it, and intake will get the earliest time. See the line between intake and the attorney.
Scope, plainly: everything on this site concerns the conversation that turns an inquiry into an engagement. Nothing here is legal advice, nothing touches the legal work or the attorney's judgment, and any wording a firm adopts is reviewed by the firm against its jurisdiction's rules on attorney advertising, solicitation and fee communication before it is used.
